The presentation covers every aspect of the Brown Hare and it is hoped that it will stimulate the audience to go out and try and see this iconic British mammal for themselves.  

The Brown Hare is a remarkable and often overlooked animal. It's anatomy and physiology are both designed for speed and escape from predators. Their senses are highly tuned to everything in their environment. Given the opportunity, they have a remarkable reproduction rate and will breed all year round. Hares have a long association with Man beginning with the Greeks and extending up to the present day where they still have a role to play in mythology and unfortunately sport. In the today’s countryside Hares are facing a major challenge and modern agriculture does not always favour them. 

The talk is delivered by Bob Reed, a local naturalist with an interest in all aspects of Natural History, but mammals in particular.  He has lived in Sawbridgeworth all his life and is Chairman of the Bishops Stortford Natural History Society. Bob has made it his mission during the pandemic to make everyone aware of the wonderful range of nature and wildlife in the Society’s ‘study area’: a 15 mile diameter circle centring on the middle of the Bishops Stortford. To this end he has put together a range of fortnightly Zoom programmes to replace our usual Winter Programme of talks and presentations.
