Mayfield breakfast. First thing in the morning you may like to enjoy a cooked breakfast – The Mayfield breakfast consists of fried egg, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and black pudding, or perhaps you would prefer Eggs Benedict – two poached eggs served on a bed of smoked bacon and served with hollandaise sauce.

Light lunches are served in the tea rooms, the menu changes regularly depending on the fresh ingredients that are available from Spittlefield’s Fruit and vegetable market. All the food is prepared here on the premises either by the cooks in the kitchen or our bakers and patisserie chef. Typically we have a homemade soup, deli board, quiche of the day, pasties, etc. For pudding we always have a selection of patisserie to choose from. We serve a limited selection of wine and beer and Luscombes organic fruit juices in addition to teas and coffees.

Afternoon Tea is very popular in the Tea Rooms, and consists of a selection of freshly made sandwiches, the bread is finely sliced and the crusts removed making perfect dainty afternoon sandwiches, we only use real butter and the fillings are also freshly prepared or cooked here. Two Dainty scones made by our bakers on the day of your Afternoon Tea – they are served with Thursday Cottage jam made in Tiptree in Essex. The Clotted Cream comes from The Devon Cream Company who produce the best quality clotted cream available. Four mini patisserie, all our patisserie is made by Noel our award winning French Patisserie Chef – he will make for you, on the day a selection of delicate cakes and pastries taking into account your special dietary requirements.

And of course Tea! English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Organic Pure Peppermint, Chamomile Citrus, Organic Lemon Sorbet, Green Mango & Peach, Red Berry Hibiscus or Organic White Ginger Pear or coffee if you prefer. These will of course be served in our beautiful antique silver tea pots and tableware.

We Believe:

We believe in good, wholesome food, traditionally made without the use of unnecessary preservatives and colourings. We use flour milled by the Essex firm of Marriages, they are a sixth generation family business who are leading experts in producing top quality flour, much of which is grown in Essex. We are keen to use the very best ingredients and from the closest source, keeping food miles to a minimum and our impact on the environment as small as possible.

History:

Nick Anderson is from a family with a very long history in baking, it’s in the blood as they say! As a boy of about ten, during the school holidays Nick went with his father to the bakery early in the morning, that is when his first interest in the family business was sparked. Father, uncles, cousins, grandfather and great grandfather have all been bakers.

Tracing Nick’s family tree back to 1680 we found no less than 32 bakers, some bakery owners others journeymen working where needed at various different bakeries.

The family started off in Devonshire in the village of Dunchidicock – famous for treacle mines. By the early 1800’s some of the family started moving and eventually settled in North East London. We found the majority of the men in the family described as ‘bakers’ in the census, although there was also an accounts clerk and book keeper. Perhaps John Vooght 1839 – 1897 saw an advantage to having a couple of his sons looking after the business side of the bakery.
