Notable Churches

The Epping Forest district is home to some of the most beautiful and historically significant churches in the country, each with its own story to tell. From medieval stone towers to quaint parish churches tucked away in villages, they offer a glimpse into centuries of local heritage and craftsmanship. The district is especially proud to be home to Greenstead Church in Chipping Ongar, recognised as the oldest wooden church in the world, dating back to the 11th century. Many of these churches are still active places of worship, yet warmly welcome visitors to step inside, explore their architecture, and enjoy the peace and beauty they have preserved for generations.
