Epping Forest District is the ideal destination to celebrate the seasons as they change. Autumn is marked by the striking colours of the trees as they turn multiple golden shades of yellow and orange to reds and brown, whilst animals prepare for the coming winter and restaurant and café menus reflect the delight that comes from hot and comforting choices after a bracing walk. Commuters travelling above ground on the Central Line through the Essex countryside appreciate the changing scene from their carriages before disappearing underground as they cross into the Capital. Drivers and riders can’t miss the change as they travel down through the forest or along winding country lanes. However, its those who cycle or walk within the countryside, forests and parks that get closest to the delights of immersing themselves in the transition from summer to winter.
We would highly recommend a walk or cycle alongside the rivers and canals and around the Five Lakes in the Lee Valley Park near Waltham Abbey to appreciate Autumn under an open sky. Or walk through any of the forest areas to surrounded by colour and be sure of as much of the autumn palette underfoot as on the trees. Plan your route with a refuel stop at one of the tea huts or cafes to be found on popular trails or after all that fresh air and exercise, reward yourself with a meal at one of the district’s many cafes, restaurants and pubs offering everything from family favourites to fine dining. Some are right in the forest or on the forest edge whilst others are a short drive away in nearby towns and villages (and themselves often alongside or near one of our popular Countrycare walks).
For those looking for something more organised or undercover try one of the Copped Hall open days or a trip on the Epping Ongar heritage railway. When the weather really demands staying undercover, hours can pass quite easily exploring the numerous antique stalls within the various river-side buildings at The Maltings or the exhibits at the District’s Museum in Waltham Abbey.
