North Weald is home to an airfield created in 1916 to defend London from airborne raiders, a frontline job in two world wars. Although it closed during the jet age, it’s still home to flying with private aircraft and historic warbirds sharing the skies with a host of leisure activities on the ground including cafes, motoring events, aviation shows, an airfield museum and a regular large outdoor market. North Weald also marks a stop on the Epping Ongar Railway with a station looking much as it did in the forties. On the edge of North Weald, Ashlyns Farm Shop is a popular destination with a restaurant, play barn, farm park and fishing lake.
