Kids for a Quid on the Epping Ongar Railway.

About

The Epping Ongar Railway Kids for a Quid

Takes place 15th to 19th February

Great Reasons to Visit the Epping Ongar Railway this Half Term

Here are some ideas of what you can do when you visit:

1. Ride both steam and diesel trains.

One of our steam engines is expected to grace the rails, alongside a diesel locomotive.

On Wednesday to Friday, our steam locomotive will operate services into Epping Forest, hauling our delicous green DMU, which offers drivers eye views! Services to Ongar will be diesel hauled.

On Saturday and Sunday, most services will be hauled by a steam locomotive towards Ongar and a diesel locomotive towards Epping Forest.

2. Ride a traditional London Bus.

Our heritage buses run regularly throughout the day to connect with the tube at Epping. Start your journey there, or take a ride during the day.

3. Enjoy a bite to eat.

We have a lovely buffet at North Weald Station and a small sweet and cake shop at Ongar - but with big tables on our trains you can also bring an 'indoor picnic' - our bar's not open today, bring your own bubbly! We have bacon baguettes, freshly-baked sausage rolls, snacks and pasties to make your picnic as delicious as possible.

4. Look out for wildlife and enjoy the views of the skyline London from Epping Forest.

Why not keep an eye out over the countryside and forests as you travel - you may see some cows, a deer, a buzzard and from some parts of the line, and on a good day, a view of London's skyline. All this from the comfort of your seat!

5. Maybe you just like to watch the trains as they go by.

Enjoy the sound and smell of a steam locomotive. Try to drag your children from the bridge when a steam engine goes underneath!

6. Take the tube to Epping.

Many children really enjoy travelling on the tube and this gives you a great reason to take advantage of TFL off peak fares. Epping is in Zone 6 so an off peak fare from Stratford could cost just £1.90 for each adult. Our hertiage buses depart from right outside the station to take you to our station at North Weald.

7. Visit the Penny Salon Gallery

The Penny Salon micro gallery at Ongar station will be open, and will have a photographic exhibition entitled "Snow and Steam" featuring the best snow themed photographs from the lens of Geoff Silcock.  There will also be a preview display of forthcoming exhibitions.

The gallery will also host a Transport Sale of books, magazines, DVDs and videos with all proceeds going to support Railway projects.

8. Enjoy a family walk or explore the historic town of Ongar

There are a number of local walks from both North Weald and Ongar stations. Your ticket is valid all day, so why not break your journey and explore the historic town of Ongar, or take a stroll through the local countryside and return on a later train?

You can download our walking tour of Ongar, or you might even have time to walk to Greensted Church - the oldest wooden church in the world! To get there, just follow the "Essex Way" footpath from Ongar High Street.

9. Great Value Fares!

Our fares offer unlimited travel on all our train and heritage bus services on the day of your visit!

Remember with these fares you can afford to bring not just your kids but your kids' friends too! Grandparents can afford to be generous and ALL the grandchildren can come together.

Timetable

The timetables for trains and connecting heritage buses can be found by selecting your date of travel here

Fares

These fares give unlimited travel on our trains and heritage buses all day long!

The following fares apply:

Services are planned to be hauled by steam and diesel locomotvies as indicated above and on our timetables. The Epping Ongar Railway reserves the right to substitute the steam locomotive for a diesel, or vice versa, in case of locomotive failure or other unavoidable circumstances.
