About the play
Rural Suffolk, 1759. A young woman is sentenced to hang for murder. When she claims to be pregnant, a jury of 12 matrons have to decide whether she’s telling the truth or simply trying to escape the noose. As Halley’s comet passes overhead and the mob bays for blood outside, the matrons wrestle with this new authority. In a time of basic medicine can they draw on their own experiences to either defend the girl or condemn her.
Startling, funny and powerful, the play mines the deep seam of the suffering of the female sex for thousands of years, forever trapped - in the eyes of men - by their biology, and how, together, they can overcome it and find themselves.
