About
This year marks 100 years since the birth of John Coltrane, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. To celebrate, the National Jazz Archive are pleased to welcome The Alex Webb Quintet bringing Coltrane’s one-of-a-kind 1963 album John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman to the stage.
Coltrane made only one record with a vocalist, and he chose a little-known crooner: Johnny Hartman. At a time when critics were attacking Coltrane's radical sound as "anti-jazz", he answered with an album of pure lyricism. Hartman's rich, unhurried baritone floats over long, slow, swirling melodies, and the result is a record that lands perfectly. It is gentle, intimate and timeless.
"Lots of people who don't like John Coltrane because he's not melodic enough love this record, because it's just beautiful." quoted one academic! This is the story behind the record: how Coltrane, under pressure to make a "traditional" album, created a masterpiece of crooning.
And the National Jazz Archive are really excited to welcome a band of true jazz giants to take us through this amazing album …and more …namely:
Loose Tubes Founder Mark Lockheart on saxophone, Parliamentary Jazz Award Nominee 2026 Marvin Mounueke on vocals & trumpet, NJA Patron & Tomorrow’s Warriors founder Gary Crosby MBE on upright bass, in-demand international drummer and percussionist Alphonso Vitale on drums and beautifully created and directed by the phenomenal composer, arranger journalist and band leader Alex Webb on keyboards.
All ages (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)
